The Lime Kiln Café & Bar

Ilfracombe’s stylish new café & restaurant.
Come and have a bite to eat or a drink right on the waterfront with Verity.

Cafe Serenity by the Harbor: A Relaxing Haven with Picturesque Views

Stumbling upon the location by chance, Karl & Sean the owners of The Lime Kiln café did not hesitate to jump in a car and head to Ilfracombe to see if the photos did it justice, what was discovered was something so much more.  A project 10 years in the making to create a safe haven for wind & man powered water sports, clubs and general sea faring fun, all under the watchful eye of Verity….a powerful creation by renowned artist Damian Hurst.

This was a unique site that needed a unique look that allows for comfort as well as style and class whilst you absorb the incredible view that is Ilfracombe harbour and Verity.  Keeping the industrial look and mixing it with a shabby chic feel, the open plan, tabling sharing aspect helps deliver a friendly, wholesome welcome.

The staff are on ensure you have a truly relaxing time with our small but well executed menu that is sourced using local ingredients wherever possible.  Come for a drink, stay for some food…..whatever you fancy just please come and enjoy the space we have created….we are very pleased with it.

Our History

The Lime Kiln is the sister restaurant to our  Lyme Regis Restaurant, The Lyme Bay,  and shares its values to the core. Simple good food from local ingredients that is not overpriced and delivered quickly and efficiently.  The comfortable, stylish surroundings, great local products and helpful, friendly staff all echo everything that makes The Lyme Bay popular all year round and we are delighted to offer the same format to the locals of Ilfracombe.

Working closely with the council and the Harbour team, we initially made them all a little nervous as we went about creating Karls vision for the internal aspect of the café.  Construction on the café had finished months prior, but we had a few ideas of our own which we installed so set about creating the space you see today.  Opening at the end of June we have been embraced by the locals very quickly just before heading into the summer season. Now we have found our feet, and the summer rush is over we plan to showcase what we are really about over the winter months and are humbled by the continued support from the Ilfracombe residents…..long may it remain.

Our Passion and Expertise

Heading up the BOH team is our Head chef Seb, who has embraced our menu values and is producing special things, the passion on the plate is noticeable across breakfast, lunch and dinner services and they continue to improve and create truly fantastic dishes.

With many years at management level across different venues and sites, Sean has created a simple formula that helps deliver a very relaxed dining experience in the best settings. Keeping the offering small helps with consistent quality. Small food menu, small wine selection and rolling cocktails caters for everyone’s taste and we make sure there is something for everyone….including kids and dogs!

Local Produce

Sourcing and using local supplier is imperative to our operation. We instantly picked up Turtons Butchers on the high street for all our breakfast meat offerings as well as prime cuts for the evening.

Our baker is EasT West Bakers located in Barnstaple. Our flowers for the tables are supplied by Sweet Williams and we will continue to use local suppliers as we continue to grow. Sourcing fish from many local suppliers is obvious given our location and we try and incorporate an abundance of different seafood dishes across our menu.

Exceptional Coffee

With an established and long relationship with Tom from Braziers Coffee (based in Wellington), it really was a no brainer on who to turn to for The Lime Kiln.

The house blend we have been serving for as long as we have been trading and have never had a bad word said about the taste profile it delivers. We keep our coffee serves simple, only using the same blend for everything and only offering barista style coffee.

Our Ethos

Our main aim is efficient service, communicating waiting times at the door on busier services just to manage people’s expectations as our locations make us very popular. We want to start your dining experience with us in the right way.

Our music is carefully crafted by Sean to ensure there is something for everyone no matter what time of the day you visit. We encourage people to share our bigger tables in the hope we can create new friendships.

We strive to be as sustainable as possible especially with what we put on the plate and given our location are very environmentally conscious on all levels. All of our off sales packaging can be composted, and we use local recycling companies at cost to ensure we are doing our bit.

Had an amazing meal, fish and chips, fish of the day caught locally. It was haddock and was so tasty, cider battered, peas and chips that needed no seasoning with homemade tartar sauce. It was so tasty, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. We had an appetizer to start, sourdough bread with marmite butter, again very tasty. Had a wonderful evening. The staff were lovely, friendly and attentive, a perfect evening 👌I will definitely be revisiting, thank you 😊👍 Parking: Parking is free after 6pm along the Cove car park Wheelchair accessibility: Sloped access, wheelchair friendly toilets and flat access to the restaurant.

Called in after a very pleasant, but windy walk from Winchelsea Beach for a hot drink and snack. Very impressed, both with the design of the building, ideal for viewing the reserve. Lots of information on local wildlife. Cafe had a good selection of drinks, hot and cold, and food. Could easily have spent a few hours there. Can imagine at weekend, we visited on a Thursday, and holiday periods could be very busy. Very impressed overall.
